Stony Creek Quarry’s Chapel Hill

What: Civil district for a city built in an active quarry

Where: Branford, Connecticut

When: 2025

Objective: To reconsider the reclamation of quarries and how they can be used during production and retirement.

Chapel Hill is the civil district of Stony Creek Quarry, strategically located between the commercial districts of Downtown and the residential district of High Ridge. Its purpose is to serve the residents of the quarry, become a landmark for visitors, and offer leisure for workers of Downtown, the Quarry Arts facility, and the Active Quarry.

The geographical significance of Chapel Hill’s placement influenced a “heaven and earth” method of organizing space. The heavenly quality of the apex of the hill makes it the perfect position for an interfaith chapel to overlook the activity in Stony Creek and become a landmark for the town. All whilst being rooted by a library filled with knowledge that is encompassed by the hill the chapel sits on. Additionally, the Library opens to the active quarry and peers of the evolution of the

District Plan

Chapel Hill is positioned on the edges of the historic quarry and the active quarry and oversees all other districts besides the High Ridge because of its 70 foot elevation advantage. This results in an accessibility issue from Downtown and the Quarry Arts to the High Ridge residences. For this reason, the Chapel Hill district serves as a core connection of the surrounding districts. In order to unify the districts, Chapel Hill must be accessible at multiple elevations.
